Position Description

Admissions Counselor 

Under the direction of the Associate Director of FTIC Recruitment, the Admissions Counselor represents Seattle University’s educational opportunities to prospective first-year studentstheir families and supporters, and the high school guidance counselor communityThis position works primarily with high school students applying to college directly from high school. However, the counseling team supports all prospective students (Pre-College, First-Year, Transfer and Post-Baccalaureate) by providing advising and support through phone calls, in-person appointments, events and other outreach programs. 

 

The ideal candidate will be a resilient and innovative problem solver, possess strong interpersonal skills that enable them to develop positive relationships and provide personalized attention to students throughout the admissions process. The Admission Counselor manages an assigned recruitment region where they are responsible for organizing recruitment activities and communicating directly with prospective and admitted students and supporters, as well as college and high school counselors. They are also responsible for the review, evaluation and initial undergraduate admission recommendation for applicants in accordance with university selection criteria. Working closely with campus stakeholders, the admissions counselor executes strategies to meet Seattle University’s undergraduate enrollment goals. The Admission Counselor is expected to attend all major admission events (preview days, admitted student days, etc.). Evening and weekend work is required, and frequent, particularly in the fall and spring seasons. 
 
Essential Functions: 
 
This position provides information to prospective students, family members, secondary school counselors, advisors and other individuals or organizations involved in the college selection process about the University’s distinct academic opportunities. The Admissions Counselor will: 

  • Plan, develop and implement on and off campus recruitment activities for assigned schools and recruitment regions including 10-12 weeks of travel.  

  • Meets with prospective Seattle University students through high school visits, campus interviews, on and off-campus information sessions and admissions group presentations and workshops.   

  • Reviewapplications and provides decision recommendations for first-year applicants. 

  • Engages and commits to the work needed to make higher education more accessible, equitable, and inclusive. Within the office structure, admission counselors will partake and serve with a working group aimed to embed these efforts in all facets of their job responsibilities. 

  • Supports and actively participates in programs and events to support and engage prospective Pre-College, First-Year, Transfer, and Post-Baccalaureate students, their families, community-based organizations, college counselors, advisors and more. 


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 
 
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and one-year professional work experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job functions. Must possess well-developed organizational skills, confidence in speaking publicly to both large and small groups, strong oral and written communication skills and establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and supporting diverse student populations. Knowledge of college admission trends and issues in higher education. Ability and willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as necessary. Valid driver's license required. 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Speaks, writes, and reads one of the following languages: Spanish, VietnameseSomali, Mandarin, Tagalog, Amharic, or Tigrinya. Interested in utilizing language skills to serve prospective students and families in the college search process. 

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and federal and state privacy laws. 

  • Experience using an ERP and CRM, specifically Ellucian Colleague system, Technolutions Slate CRM. 

  • Knowledge of financial aid trends and issues. 

  • Experience working with diverse young adult and youth populations. 

  • Experience with creative marketing, media production, and social media management focused on or targeted to young adults.
