Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor, Elementary Literacy

Position Description

Description: The College of Education (COE) at Seattle University seeks applications for a full-time, Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor to join the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Social Justice (rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications). This individual will join a cohesive and collaborative faculty passionate and committed to preparing critical, reflective, and skilled educators for social justice. This clinical faculty member will teach and support teacher education courses and field experiences across undergraduate and graduate teacher education pathways in both in-person and online formats. The faculty member in this position will also contribute to the development of a new hybrid social justice teacher education program for working professionals, aimed at diversifying the teacher workforce. Teaching responsibilities focus on elementary literacy education informed by sociocultural perspectives on learning and social foundations, anti-racist pedagogies, and curriculum. The Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor will be responsible for teaching a full course load of teacher education courses per term, in addition to mentoring, advising, and supporting students. The position start date is September 1, 2024.

Primary responsibilities include teaching both in-person and online, service, and program development. Responsibilities will also include course and/or curriculum design, supporting program continuous improvement activities, working with diverse communities, and student advising and mentoring. Workload will focus primarily on K-8 literacy and language education within a context of inclusion and anti-racist culturally sustaining pedagogies. Service will include developing collaborative relationships with external partners, program activities such as reviewing admissions files, conducting program information sessions for prospective students, admissions interviews, and working with other faculty regarding general program and College operations.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree with preparation in teacher education with a focus on literacy education or related field.
  • Three or more years of experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds in K-8 schools.   
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equitable, anti-racist teaching practices, curriculum, assessment, and instruction and support of inclusive, student-centered classroom communities in elementary settings.
  • Capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate courses both in-person and online in literacy methods and assessment language development, and social foundations.
  • Evidence of ability to work and teaching collaboratively in team settings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. 

 

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Three or more years of experience teaching preservice teacher candidates.
  • Experience with critical literacy education and anti-racist pedagogies.
  • Knowledge of application of sociolinguistics and sociocultural approaches in classrooms and schools.
  • Demonstrate active engagement with current scholarship and innovative practices that focus on K-8 literacy and teacher preparation.
  • Experience with mentoring/coaching teachers.

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $75,000 - $80,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
