Position Description
The Associate
Director of the International Student Center (ISC) will serve as both a Designated
School Official (DSO) for our F program and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO)
for our J program. This position will support the Director, manage University
systems such as Slate, Colleague and Etrieve, be responsible for SEVIS record
keeping, and supervise student employees. It is anticipated that the Associate
Director will spend approximately 50% of their time on DSO functions and 50% of
their time on ARO functions, supporting H1-B and permanent residence
applications, and other duties as assigned.
ARO Functions (Visiting Students and
Scholars):
- Serve as Seattle University’s Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for international students and scholars coming to Seattle University under the J Visa program.
- Work with the office of Education Abroad and university departments, schools, and colleges to manage the immigration aspects of visiting scholars and exchange students.
- Act as the liaison between the International Student Center and university departments, schools, and colleges to ensure uniform compliance with J-Visa program requirements.
- Produce, receive, and process application paperwork for visiting students and scholars under the J-Visa program.
Issue relevant letters, documents, and communication related to visa processing. - Assist students and scholars with obtaining University system access (for example access to buildings via campus ID) for visiting students and scholars.
- Maintain filing requirements under State Department rules.
- Assure SEVIS compliance and keep all required information updated in SEVIS in a timely manner.
- Assist in ensuring annual reporting requirements are satisfied.
- Coordinate with the Responsible Officer to prepare the annual report to the State Department describing Seattle University’s program.
- Interact with State Department officials regarding Seattle University’s J visa program, as appropriate.
- Follow requirements established under agreements, including MOUs, with partner institutions.
- Support international students and scholars on campus.
DSO Functions:
- Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for Seattle University.
- Create and manage accurate quarterly lists of enrolled international students at all levels of the University. Identify students who require follow-up by ISC advisors for non-compliance with SEVIS regulations.
- Create and continually update lists of new international students who will be enrolling in the upcoming quarter at all levels.
- Enter individual students’ data in Colleague.
- Enroll students in the CANVAS international student orientation course.
- Monitor visa issuance status of initial status students.
- Communicate
new student orientation information via email, Slate, and in person to all
incoming international students.
- Manage the logistics of the ISC Welcome
Workshops, including reserving rooms, ordering food, securing guest
speakers and tour guides, preparing session handouts, and creating signage
for the events.
- Complete quarterly SEVIS registration of all
current international students.
- Working with InformSU, graduate admissions,
undergraduate admissions, and law school compile an annual report of
Seattle University international student demographics (based on fall term
enrollment).
- Work with the Registrar’s Office to create a
list of graduating international students prior to the annual June
commencement.
- Complete annually requested statistical
reports such as “Open Doors”.
- Monitor SEVIS reports and contact students
as needed. Reporting lists include, but not limited to:
Students with an approaching I-20 end date;
Students with OPT approval but no reported employer information;
Students with an approaching OPT end date.
H1-B and Permanent Residency Functions
Support the Vice Provost of Global Engagement with H1-B Visa and Permanent Residence applications for faculty.
Work with outside counsel to track applications.
Maintain university files for H1-B and Permanent Residence applications.
Ensure established University policy is maintained.
General:
- Remain well-informed about Department of State, Department of Labor, and Department of Homeland Security policies relating to the F, J, H and permanent residence processes.
- Maintain knowledge of, and incorporate, best practices in international student and scholar services.
- Advise Seattle University departments and faculty members about visa issues, policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with other professionals on and off campus who are responsible for coordinating various aspects of visa processes for Seattle University.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as international education, higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, or a related field is required OR a combination of education and experience sufficient complete the duties of the role as outlined.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in international education or related fields. This may include experience in advising international students, developing programs, and managing staff.
- Solid working knowledge of immigration regulations and international student services.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills necessary for collaborating with diverse student populations, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with external partners, such as consulates, embassies, community organizations, and other institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master's degree in a relevant field such as international education, higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
- Experience with using the SEVIS database.
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in international education or related fields. This may include experience in advising international students, developing programs, and managing staff.

Compensation at a Glance:
Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000
Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents
its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the
time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be
determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected
candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity
considerations, and available market information, and not based on a
candidate’s gender or any other protected status.

Hybrid Eligible*
This
position may be eligible for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of
an introductory work period of 3-6 months. This may mean that a hybrid eligible
role will begin on-campus initially and then will transition to hybrid format
following onboarding and training. Flexible work plans are subject to periodic
