Position Description

The MOSAIC Center leads the university’s student-facing diversity, equity, and inclusion priorities by creating meaningful opportunities for student access, inclusion, and community. The programs and services offered through the MOSAIC Center promote Seattle University’s Jesuit Catholic mission of “educating the whole person, to professional formation, and to empowering leaders for a just and humane world” by stretching students’ awareness of self and others, and by understanding their part in co-creating a more inclusive campus environment. While we play a critical role in facilitating the intercultural learning and development of all students at Seattle University, we pay particular attention to the needs of students from historically minoritized and underrepresented backgrounds. At the MOSAIC Center, we provide specific support for the following student populations: BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Undocumented, First-Generation College Student, Commuter, Transfer, Veteran and Military-Connected, Graduate and Adult Learner. 

The MOSAIC Center is part of the Student & Campus Life (SCL) team, which is part of the larger division of Academic & Student Affairs. As part of this division, we are committed to creating a vibrant and inclusive learning environment that supports students to not only persist but thrive through graduation. We aim to provide programs, resources, and services that are student centered, needs focused, and data informed.  

Job Purpose: In collaboration with other MOSAIC Center staff, the Assistant Director will lead the development, implementation, and assessment of various programs, trainings, and services that address the needs of historically underrepresented and minoritized students.  

Programs that the Assistant Director is responsible for include but are not limited to peer mentorship and leadership development programs catered to the needs of specific communities, trainings and workshops designed to educate students and colleagues about the needs of specific populations, and retreats and community gatherings that promote holistic care and wellbeing of students. 

The Assistant Director will provide supervision and mentorship for graduate and undergraduate student staff, one-on-one coaching and intervention for diverse populations of students, and serve as a resource for campus partners in our collective pursuit of creating a more inclusive campus. 

Essential Responsibilities: 

BIPOC and Undocumented Student Support Initiatives (40%) 

  • Coordinate, assess, and expand the signature programs catered to BIPOC students which include the following: 
    • Connections Leadership Program – pre-fall immersion for BIPOC and first-generation college students 
    • BIPOC Lunch – quarterly gathering hosted in collaboration with Campus Ministry 
    • Rooted Retreat – annual retreat for BIPOC students, created in collaboration with Campus Ministry 
    • Costco Scholars Network – series of programs and events created for students who receive the Costco Scholarship in collaboration with Career Engagement Office and University Advancement 
  • Develop meaningful portfolio of programs and experiences for BIPOC students, in partnership with student staff and colleagues, that promote learning and increase sense of belonging 
  • Grow and strengthen the existing portfolio of undocumented student support work at Seattle University, which includes facilitating quarterly UndocuAlly trainings, convening and leading monthly Undocumented Student Support Network meetings, and developing resources for undocumented and mixed status families.
  • Build a network of support (institutionally, locally, and nationally) to stay informed on high impact practices and changes in policies and legislation pertaining to immigration that have an impact on the needs and experience of students. 
  • Provide thought leadership and execute innovative ideas for new programs and initiatives that support the retention and success of BIPOC and undocumented students 

Supervision, Leadership Development, and Training (40%) 

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate Graduate Program Coordinator(s) who are responsible for conceptualizing and executing meaningful programs and events 
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate Community Ambassadors who work within the Intercultural Link (Community space for BIPOC and Undocumented students)
  • Recruit, train, and supervise CLP+ Peer Mentors 

Departmental Operations & Leadership (20%) 

  • Develop new campus partnership and deepen existing relationships to effectively collaborate on and achieve university’s priorities outlined in Strategic Directions, including the goal of recruiting and retaining BIPOC students 
  • Participate and/or lead work groups and committee within the SCL Team and campus 
  • Represent the department at various university events and functions 
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate interns as necessary 
  • Coordinate retreats for students, staff, and faculty 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years full-time work experience in a college or university environment with responsibility for program coordination and advising OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job such as those listed above  
  • Knowledge of innovative high-impact practices to improve campus climate, multicultural competence development, and supporting a diverse student body 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, populations including but not limited to students of color, undocumented students, LGBTQIA+ students, and first-generation students. 
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and developing graduate and undergraduate students 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, and student constituencies  
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends 
  • Excellent interpersonal and strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Teams 

Preferred Qualifications   

  • Master’s degree and two years full-time work in a college or university environment  
  • Familiarity and appreciation for Jesuit higher education 
  • Strong counseling or advising experience 
  • Conversant understanding of student development practice  
  • Capability to multi-task 
  • Prior experience developing and implementing assessments

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $58,000 - $60,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
