Senior Financial Manager

Position Description

Seattle University is seeking a skilled and effectual professional to serve as a Senior Financial Manager.  Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, University Budget Officer, the role of the Senior Financial Manager will serve as the executive-level financial manager for the divisions reporting to the University President and areas reporting to the CFO.  This position has a dotted line report to the President and CFO and will collaborate closely with the Administrators and Financial Managers of the units reporting directly to the President and CFO.  These areas are collectively responsible for more than $10M in annual revenue collection and annual expenditure budgets of more than $94M. 

The Senior Financial Manager will also support the Vice Provost for Graduate, Executive, and Professional Education in driving growth of graduate programs through development and analysis of business plans and margin sharing agreements.  With the support of the larger financial management team, the Senior Budget Manager will provide a high level of financial oversight and will support internal financial processes in tandem with the University’s budgeting, forecasting, and multi-year financial planning.  The Senior Financial Manager will possess strong interpersonal skills, a solid understanding of budget and financial management principles, proven organizational abilities and the capability to drive nuanced decision-making to resolution.

Supporting the President and CFO (40%)

  •  Provide high-level oversight and management of the divisions and areas reporting to the President and CFO, which currently include the Office of the President, Office of the CFO, University Counsel, University Advancement, Strategic Initiatives, Human Resources, Diversity and Inclusion, Mission Integration, Athletics, University Affairs, Information Technology, Finance and Business Affair, and Facilities.
  • Regularly compile, interpret and communicate financial information to executives and financial managers under span of oversight and recommend and/or implement further courses of action to ensure effective financial management.
  • Develop PowerPoint slides and other aspects of financial presentations in support of executive leadership or other budget-related presentations.
  • As directed, collaborate with Human Resources regarding job description development and review, posting of open positions and applicant management.
  • As directed, serve as the President’s and/or CFO’s designee in standing and   ad-hoc committees charged with resource allocation or other financial management decision-making.
  • As directed, assist with data requests from accreditation and other external constituents.
  • As directed, support the President and Chief Financial Officer in other financial management activities and projects.

Ongoing Financial Management (35%)

  •  Proactively communicate process requirements, resource decisions, and decision- making parameters at an appropriate level of detail and scope to both technical and senior executive constituents.
  •  Support and coordinate the work of relevant Administrators and Financial Manager constituents to incorporate previous budget figures, revenue enhancements, new investments, and compensation needs into annual budget proposals and inputs.
  • Provide key forecasting of revenue and expenditures projections for areas reporting to the President and CFO.
  • Regularly meet with area financial managers to review performance, identify issues, and craft action plans to ensure healthy financial management.
  • Promote a culture of financial responsibility through adherence to the university’s financial policies and processes as guided by the institution’s strategic plans.
  • Recommend and/or implement courses of action to ensure effective financial management.

Supporting the Office of Graduate, Online, and Professional Education (25%)

  •  Coordinate with CFO, academic Deans, and Vice Provost of Graduate, Online and Professional Education to develop business plans for new graduate programs and new non-credit executive and professional education programs.
  •  Collaborate with the financial management personnel to provide review, analysis, and feedback of new and enhanced academic program business plans sufficient to assure the President, Provost, and CFO of the financial viability of proposed investments.
  •  Provide oversight and feedback to new and revised margin sharing agreements related to graduate and professional education programs.  Work with academic Deans’ Offices and Provost’s Office to plan and track related college and program-level margin sharing investments.
  •  Work with the Office of the Controller and Finance Office to track and distribute margin sharing revenues with an appropriate level of reporting and communication.
  •  Track ROI for new initiatives and investments, including tracking program-level five year planned incremental investments and revenues for both graduate and professional education programs.
  •  Lead a working group of financial and technological personnel in developing, refining, and promoting financial reporting related to ROI and investments related to graduate and professional education program growth.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, analytics, business, accounting, finance, mathematics or related field and five years of experience in a professional environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Advanced analytical skills with demonstrated ability to discern/extract meaningful insights and recommendations from analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to coordinate communication across multiple reporting lines and priorities.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while completing multiple projects and activities in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • A successful candidate will know how to work effectively within a university culture and with a broad range of constituents of varying technical ability and financial acumen.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience in providing equivalent essential duties within a higher education organization.
  • Master’s degree in computer science, analytics, business, accounting, finance, mathematics, or related field.

Compensation at a Glance

Salary Range: $97,000 - $125,0000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.

Hybrid Eligible*
This position may be eligible for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of an introductory work period of 3-6 months. This may mean that a hybrid eligible role will begin on-campus initially and then will transition to hybrid format following onboarding and training.
