Position Description
The Campus Public Safety Officer is a crucial member of Seattle
University South Lake Union Campus Public Safety team, serving as the first
responder for the University under the guidance of the Public Safety Supervisor
or their designee. This dynamic and active role demands a high level of
vigilance, quick decision-making, and meaningful engagement with the Seattle
University South Lake Union Campus. As a uniformed, non-commissioned officer,
the Public Safety Officer is responsible for actively patrolling campus
grounds, providing essential medical and security assistance, coordinating
emergency services, documenting critical incidents, and ensuring the safety and
well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position is deeply
rooted in community service and mental health support, emphasizing a
compassionate and proactive approach to assisting the greater campus community.
The Campus Public Safety Officer maintains a shift schedule
that includes coverage during campus closures, holidays, and special events.
Officers work collaboratively in teams of 5-6 personnel, which include a
supervisor and dispatcher, ensuring comprehensive support and coordination. Seattle
University South Lake Union Campus Public Safety Department operates 24 hours a
day, seven days a week, to provide uninterrupted safety services. Officers are
assigned to one of several teams, and these teams rotate between day and night
shifts every six months to ensure equitable distribution of responsibilities
and balanced coverage. This rotation system not only supports the well-being of
the officers but also ensures consistent, high-quality safety services for the
entire Seattle University South Lake Union Campus community.
Campus Safety & Security Operations (60%)
- Conduct
proactive patrols to monitor security, prevent incidents, and ensure
campus safety.
- Respond
to non-emergency requests, provide campus escorts, and assist with general
security concerns.
- Operate
the communications center, including monitoring safety systems, CCTV,
dispatching responders, and keeping records.
- Uphold
Seattle University South Lake Union Campus policies while maintaining a
customer-service-focused approach.
- Assist
with Mailroom operations as needed
- Be
able to work at the main campus as needed
Emergency Response & Incident Management (30%)
- Serve
as the first responder to emergencies, including medical incidents,
accidents, and security threats.
- Provide
immediate medical assistance and coordinate emergency services (EMS, fire,
law enforcement).
- Document
and maintain accurate records of incidents, ensuring compliance with legal
and institutional policies.
Community Engagement & Collaboration (10%)
- Offer
support and guidance to students and staff, focusing on mental health and
well-being.
- Collaborate
with other Seattle University South Lake Union Campus departments to
enhance campus safety and services.

Qualifications
- High
School Diploma or GED.
- One year
in a customer service role.
- Ability
to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, walking,
and running significant distances; restrain and take into custody another
person; receive university-sponsored self-defense training; lift or
otherwise move up to the weight of a person; climb stairs; occasionally
work at heights above 30 feet.
- Must
be able to perform duties in confined spaces and varying outdoor weather
conditions.
- Ability
to communicate effectively, in both oral and written form, including use
of two-way radio, telephone, and in face-to-face contacts.
- Must
be able to give or take direction in stressful or emergency situations.
- Strong
writing skills
- Must
be at least 21 years of age in order to legally enter a licensed or
unlicensed drinking establishment to enforce rules and regulations.
- A
valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid is required within three months of hire (training is
provided). All
candidates must show a demonstrated commitment to diversity and the

Preferred Qualifications:
- 4 year
bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Higher
education experience.

Compensation at a Glance
Salary Range: $48,500 - $49,800
Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents
its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the
time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be
determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected
candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity
considerations, and available market information, and not based on a
candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
