Position Description

In alignment with Seattle University’s mission, the Associate Director, Basic Needs & Student Support promotes wellness, sense of belonging, and access to basic needs by connecting students with campus and local resources needed to thrive at Seattle University. This is a 2-year, term-limited position. The position may be extended on a funds-available basis.  

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Students, the Associate Director is a member of the Seattle University CARE Team and works collaboratively with other team members to connect students to programs, resources, and services throughout the university. The Associate Director promotes student retention by providing direct support to students who need assistance accessing resources related to mental health, physical health, basic needs, academic support, financial concerns, relationship concerns, and other barriers to their success. The Associate Director interacts with students who may be experiencing stressful, complex, and sensitive life circumstances. The Associate Director manages the Seattle University basic needs initiatives, which include the SU Wellness Café and Food Pantry, Food Recovery Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Counseling, financial planning, Dean of Students Student Emergency Assistance Program, and Emergency Redhawk Dining Card program, and chairs the Seattle University Basic Needs Coordinating Committee.

This position requires culturally competent interpersonal communication, de-escalation skills, and the ability to recognize and prioritize situations requiring immediate attention.   

Essential Functions    

Case Management & Student Support (40%)   

  • Serve as a member of the university CARE (Coordinated Assistance and Resource Education) Team.   
  •  Act as recorder and update case notes during weekly CARE Team meetings.  
  • Manage a student of concern caseload at the direction of the Assistant Dean of Students. 
  • Meet with students to provide direct support, build rapport, assess risk, determine needs, develop care plans, refer to resources, and follow up at regular intervals to track progress. 
  • Provide appropriate interventions for students in crisis, including on- and off-campus emergency services when concerns about imminent harm exist.  
  • Facilitate communication and the exchange of information between various student-facing departments, including , Advising, Public Safety, Housing & Residence Life, Disability Services, Student Support Center, Integrity Formation, Wellness & Health Promotion, Athletics, academic departments, and others. 
  • Consult with faculty, staff, students, parents/families, and others about how to respond to various student concerns.  
  • Use Slate for Student Success to alert appropriate faculty and staff about students at risk of attrition or those who may require additional support. 
  • Create, maintain, and update case notes related to encounters with students of concern in Maxient.  
  • Notify the Department of Public Safety & the Office of the Dean of Students when encountering a student in crisis or in need of immediate assistance.   

Basic Needs Program Management (45%)  

  • Provide leadership to and manage the Seattle University basic needs initiatives, which include the Wellness Café & Food Pantry, Food Recovery program, SNAP Counseling, financial planning, and Emergency Redhawk Dining funds program.  
  • Evaluate Dean of Students Emergency Student Assistance program and Emergency Redhawk Dining funds applications, coordinate with Student Financial Services to determine eligibility when appropriate, and make assistance determinations. 
  • Participate in Washington State Insurance Navigator and Certified Application Counselor training and provide insurance navigation and counseling support to Seattle University students.     Supervise one half-time Graduate Program Coordinator for Basic Needs Initiatives, as well as Undergraduate Program Assistants for food security initiatives & student volunteers to staff the pantry.
  • Collaborate with academic partners to educate faculty, staff, and students about the basic needs program and refer students to access resources.
  • Manage inventory and physical food pantry space. 
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and prepare reports for executive leadership of student needs and usage of basic needs and emergency aid resources. 
  • Develop and implement a financial wellness education program in collaboration with Student Financial Services and other key stakeholders. 
  • Research local and federal off-campus basic need resources and provide education about accessing benefits, such as SNAP, Apple Care (Medicaid),and Cities of Seattle and Tacoma and the Counties of King, Pierce, and Snohomish assistance programs for interested or eligible students. 
  • Manage a $61,000 operating budget and oversee the appropriate use of related donor funds.  
  • Partner with Director of Student Engagement and Support at the South Lake Union campus to establish and maintain basic needs and pantry program.
  • Serve as Seattle University’s Basic Needs Coordinator representative to the Washington Student Achievement Council and maintains current knowledge of  state and federal regulations, requirements, and policies related to the basic needs program area
  • Chairs the Seattle University Basic Needs Coordinating Committee, an ad-hoc committee of staff and faculty providing various basic needs supports.   
  • Coordinates, plans, develops, and conducts presentations and workshops relating to basic needs services and resources, specifically the annual Food Justice Summit and serves on Laudato Si Goal 4 Committee. 

Education & Training (10%)  

  • Develop outreach and training programs for students, faculty, and staff related to specific student support topics, such as how to refer to the CARE Team, food security initiatives, basic needs access, mental health resources, faculty and staff development programs, and others.
  • Identify and conduct targeted outreach for specific student groups, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, undocumented, first-generation, international, veteran, online students, and other communities with elevated basic needs insecurity.  
  • Facilitate summer training programs for various professional staff and student leaders and groups, including the HRL Senior Team, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, and Health & Wellness Crew (HAWC).  
  • Participate in Mental Health First Aid facilitator training and facilitate Mental Health First Aid training for faculty, staff, and students.  
  • Participate in Orientation programs in collaboration with Assistant Dean of Students to facilitate various panels and educational sessions about student support, CARE Team, and basic needs support. 
  • Meet regularly with direct supervisor.    

Other Duties (5%)  

  • Serve on Student & Campus Life team and university committees and working groups as assigned.   
    Other duties as assigned.   

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work or a related field and 3 or more years of professional experience in a higher education setting. 
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Seattle University.    

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • A master's degree in education, psychology, social work or a related field and 2 or more years of professional experience in a higher education setting. 
  • Experience with higher education financial aid systems and/or basic needs programs.
  • Knowledge of or experience with the Cities of Seattle and Tacoma, and the Counties of King, Pierce, and Snohomish basic needs support systems.

Compensation at a Glance

Salary Range: $36 - $38 per hour

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
